Tomato varieties
; fall and winter, 2006
Note: Dates following descriptions are approximate availability dates. These can change due to weather or other conditions.  All are available in limited quantities.

 

“Round Reds”
We grow “home garden” varieties and harvest them as they are turning. So, they taste better than most “store bought” tomatoes, but are more perishable. We pack them in 4 X 5 or 5 X 6 boxes. Our prices are almost always higher than the normal market prices.  (Nov. 1-April 30)


“Round yellows”

These are “normal” size and shape tomatoes, but are yellow or orange. Varieties may be ‘Orange Blossom’, ‘Lemon Boy’, or ‘Golden Girl’.  (Nov. 1-April 1).

 

Modern specialty variety
‘Tomande’-red
, beefsteak type; looks and tastes similar to an heirloom

 

Cherry-types (packed in pint clamshells-mix or match!)

  • *Jolly-large, red fruit with a tip (Nov. 1-April 15).
  • *Isis candy, round to oblong yellow fruit marbled with red (Nov. 1-April 15).
  • *Sugary-red, oval shaped tomato with a point (Nov. 1-April 15).
  • *Black cherry, dark red/purple cherry with a sweet, rich black tomato flavor (Nov. 1-April 15).
  • *Sun sugar, an orange cherry that has a sweet, fruity taste (Nov. 1-April 15).
  • Porter, an heirloom from Texas. Fruit is red, oval, and has a real tomato flavor, although not quite as sweet as some of the newer cherry types. These plants will stand up to a lot, so we grow them during the hot, wet hurricane season! (Oct. 15-Dec. 1).

  

“Heirlooms”-old varieties, noted for their full flavor, and unique shapes, sizes, and colors (These are usually packed in mixed 17 lb. boxes of whatever varieties are available that day. If you need a specific amount of one or more varieties, please let us know early so we can pack them for you.) Medium to extra large fruit (packed in open single layer boxes, 18-19 lbs per box) 

  • Black pear, small pear shaped black tomatoes (Jan. 15-April 1).
  • Brandywine, probably the best-known heirloom, this pinkish-red tomato is noted for its flavor, “meatiness”, and size-often over a pound (Dec. 15-April 30).
  • Cherokee purple, a large fruit with purple tints, excellent tomato flavor (Dec. 15-April 1).
  • *Creole, In honor of New Orleans, we’re growing this southern specialty tomato from Louisiana. It’s a round red one, said to be sweet and juicy. (Dec. 15-April 1).
  • Copia, very large red and yellow fruit (Jan. 15-April 1).
  • Jaune Flammé, small orange tomato with an excellent flavor-strong acid but balanced with sweetness (Dec.  15-April 1).
  • *Nyagous, Medium to large “black” tomatoes with sweet full flavor (Jan. 15-April 1).
  • Pineapple, large red and yellow fruit, not a pineapple flavor, but sweet and fruity (Jan. 15-April 1).
  • Pruden’s purple, a large pink tomato, very similar to Brandywine (Dec. 1-April 30).
  • San Marzano Redorta, large, red Italian plum-type (Dec. 15-April 15).
  • Big zebra, a unique variety; medium sized tomato (3-4 per pound), greenish-yellow fruit with darker green stripes; a tart, almost salty flavor (Dec. 15-April 15).
  • Striped German/Hillbilly, large flat yellow tomatoes with red marbling on the inside (Dec. 15-April 1).
  • Yellow Brandywine, yellow variety of the famous Brandywine tomatoes (Dec. 15-April 15).

 

*This is our first time to grow these varieties.

Other varieties? Please ask-if we can locate a seed source, we will try to grow a certain variety this season if you let us know by Nov. 1. It takes 70-90 days to grow most tomato varieties.
